Is Your Child Gifted? You Might Be Surprised.

So many people are proud of the fact that their children are gifted — and they should be. I contend, however, that whether your child is officially labeled “gifted” or not, as parents we are obligated to provide a gifted environment for them. While your child may not fit the classical academic definition of “gifted,” he may be capable of much more than you think, given the right environment. So how do we go about this major endeavor?

Talk, Talk, Talk

If you are a parent, then you are a teacher. Talk to, educate, and teach your children as you live out your days. When you drive to the supermarket, talk to them about driving and safety (even if they are young). In the supermarket talk to them about foods and where the foods are grown. If you are in a gift shop, read some of the cards with your kids. Talk to them about the weather, the clouds, God, music, the world, art, manners, science, family, etc. Are you seeing the bigger picture? Be vigilant as a parent/teacher and talk to your children.

Study your child

Look at your child’s personality and what interests him or her and then try to provide the things that will help your child grow and prosper. Try exposing you child to as much as you can and then focus on specific areas to to build their strengths and confidence. Some children have physical intelligence and can be encouraged in sports or dance, while others may excel in emotional intelligence which can be channeled by visiting the elderly or caring for a pet. These are only examples of two kinds of non-traditional intelligences.

The key is to help your child find joy in life and to understand that we are each unique human beings. Continue to watch and concentrate on your children. They will lead you to the things that interest them. It is then your job to help that interest thrive.

Turn Off The TV

I have heard it said that television starves the imagination and I believe that is true. It is wise to limit television watching. In place of that listen to many different kinds of music, sing, dance, visit the library often, have picnics, work on putting a puzzle together etc. Continue to encourage them to explore the world.

Throw Yourself Into Being A Parent/Teacher

Why not give this idea your all by using every ounce of intelligence you have to create a gifted environment at home so that your children can say, “I have gifted parents and live in a gifted home.”
